Graph-based Method for Multitemporal Segmentation of Sea Ice Floes from Satellite Data

چکیده
Automated segmentation of the sea ice evolution would allow scientists studying climate change to build accurate models of the sea ice meltdown process, which is a sensitive climate indicator. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which uses shape analysis and graph-based optimization for segmentation of a multiyear ice floe from time series of satellite images. Differently of the state-of-theart sea ice segmentation techniques, the new method does not rely on the coherence of the intensity values between successive time moments, but only on the coherence of the shape. We successfully validated the performance of the proposed approach on a set of AMSR-E and MODIS images and estimated the area of a sea ice floe as a function of time.

Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Estimation from CryoSat-2 Satellite Data Using Machine Learning-Based Lead Detection
Satellite altimeters have been used to monitor Arctic sea ice thickness since the early 2000s. In order to estimate sea ice thickness from satellite altimeter data, leads (i.e., cracks between ice floes) should first be identified for the calculation of sea ice freeboard. In this study, we proposed novel approaches for lead detection using two machine learning algorithms: decision trees and ran...
متن کاملScaling in Fracture and Refreezing of Sea Ice
Sea ice breaks up and regenerates rapidly during winter conditions in the Arctic. Analyzing satellite data from the Kara Sea, we find that the average ice floe size depends on weather conditions. Nevertheless, the frequency of floes of size A is a power law, N ∼ A−τ , where τ = 1.6 ± 0.2, for A less than approximately 100 km. This scale-invariant behaviour suggests a competition between fractur...
متن کاملContinuum sea ice rheology determined from subcontinuum mechanics
[1] A method is presented to calculate the continuum-scale sea ice stress as an imposed, continuum-scale strain-rate is varied. The continuum-scale stress is calculated as the areaaverage of the stresses within the floes and leads in a region (the continuum element). The continuum-scale stress depends upon: the imposed strain rate; the subcontinuum scale, material rheology of sea ice; the chose...

In October 2003 a campaign on board the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis had the objective to validate standard Aqua Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) sea-ice products. Additionally, the satellite laser altimeter on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) was in operation. To capture the large-scale information on the sea-ice conditions necessary for satellite v...
متن کاملSea Ice Floe Detection and Classification using Adaptive Clustering
Detection and classification of sea ice floe is very important for understanding physical process in the polar regions. Important thing is to know the shapes, sizes and spatial distribution of ice floes for understanding the physical process. Several image processing algorithms have been applied to samples of sea ice images in order to extract useful information. In this paper we are proposing ...
